Pre-Conference Short Courses

Sunday, April 27      2:00 - 5:00pm

(SC1) Protein Folding, Re-Folding and Aggregation
*

Course Instructors:
Theodore W. Randolph, Ph.D., Gillespie Professor, Center for Pharmaceutical Biotechnology Co-Director, University of Colorado (invited)
Carlos N. Pace, Ph.D., Texas A and M University
Paul Ramage, Ph.D., Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research

Protein Folding

  • Thermodynamic forces that fold proteins (hydrogen bonds
    vs. hydrophobic effects)

  • Kinetics of protein folding

  • Analytical methods to monitor protein folding

Protein Aggregation

  • Colloidal and thermodynamic protein stability

  • Basic formulation strategies

  • Analytical methods for monitoring protein aggregation

Protein Refolding

  • Pressure and chaotrope-based refolding methods

  • Designing screening studies to develop refolding conditions

(SC3) Phage and Yeast Display Library Screening for the Novice*

Presenters:
Jamie Kathleen Scott, M.D., Ph.D., Simon Fraser University
Andrew M. Bradbury, M.B. B.S., Ph.D., Los Alamos National Laboratory
James D. Marks, M.D., Ph.D., University of California, San Francisco

This workshop is meant to bring the novice up to speed on the display technologies covered by the main conference.  The workshop will provide an overview of:

  • Phage display and construction of phage-displayed peptide, scFv and Fab libraries

  • Yeast display and construction of yeast-displayed scFv and Fab libraries

  • Screening technologies that are compatible with phage- vs. yeast-display libraries

*Separate Registration Required

Monday, April 28    9:00am - 12:00pm

(SC2) Preclinical Development Antibodies
*

Course Instructors:
Mohammad Tabrizi, Ph.D., Director, MedImmune
Scott Klalamp, Ph.D., Principal Scientist, MedImmune
Gadi Bornstein, Ph.D., Principal Scientist, AstraZeneca R&D

  • Affinity Determination: Why Does It Matter, How Can It Impact Your Clinical Dose Selection?

  • How Do We Measure Affinity and the Challenges

  • Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics of Antibodies

  • Preclinical Development of Antibodies

PROBLEM-SOLVING
BREAK-OUT SESSIONS

Break-out Sessions are one hour group discussions focused on a particular topic. This is a moderated discussion with brainstorming and interactive problem solving amongst scientists from diverse areas who share a common interest in the discussion topic.
